AUSTRALIA WELCOMES THE RESULTS OF THE CHILEAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECCION
Canberra, Australia.
Australia welcomes the results of the Chilean Presidential Election
I congratulate Dr Michelle Bachelet on her election, on 15 January 2006, as President of the Republic of Chile.
Dr Bachelet is well-known to Australia having visited as a Guest of the Government in 2004 when she was Chile's Minister of Defence. Dr Bachelet also found refuge in Australia during the Pinochet years.
I look forward to working with Dr Bachelet to broaden further the bilateral relationship with Chile. Australian relations with Chile are strong, based on significant Austrailan investment (predominantly in the mining industry) and a large community in Australia of Chilean origin. Chile is also a valued partner in a number of important multilateral forums including APEC and the WTO.
The Chilean President, HE Mr Ricardo Lagos, visited Australia in July 2005.
